The Future Artists in Residence (FAIR) program

Founded by the visionary Charlene Codner in 2017, is not just an art program—it is a transformative journey of self-discovery, healing, and empowerment for the girls at the Resource Center for Women and Girls (RCWG).

Charlene, with her unique approach, brought fresh ideas that forever changed the way we engage with art and expression. She encouraged us to see art not just as a medium of creativity, but as a way to reflect deeply on our lives.

Reflection

“When the FAIR program began, Charlene asked us to walk around the serene compound and reflect on something that truly represented who we are. This was completely new to me and very weird—I had no idea what to think or even where to start,”

recalls Wangui, an RCWG beneficiary and Artivist.

“I ended up drawing this butterfly, which at the time, I thought was far from perfect. It was crooked, missing an antenna, and, in my eyes, incomplete and very ugly. But Charlene saw something different. She saw the transformation, the growth, the journey I’d been on, and she called it beautiful. That butterfly wasn’t just a drawing—it was my story, my pain, my growth since joining RCWG, and Charlene helped me see that.”

Self Expression through Art Journaling

Since its inception, the FAIR art program has transformed the lives of many girls, becoming RCWG’s most powerful tool for art journaling. Art journaling, under Charlene’s guidance, has not only allowed girls to express themselves but has also been a crucial tool for mental health.

It provides a safe space for the girls to process their emotions, navigate their experiences, and build a sense of identity and belonging.

In April 2024, Charlene, with the help of RCWG, organized an art retreat that brought together 50 adolescent girls. The impact was profound as these girls were able to tap into their creative power and share their stories through art in ways they never had before.

The Journey of Self Discovery

And it doesn’t stop there. Our younger girls aged 9 years – 12 years, fondly referred to as the 'cocoons,' are also part of this journey of self-discovery. They are beginning to find their power and voice in the society through art and storytelling, sharing their experiences as they grow and evolve. The program provides them a safe space to embrace their identity and experience the healing power of art.

The FAIR program, through Charlene’s leadership, has become a sanctuary of expression and growth for these girls. We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Charlene for partnering with us to create this impactful program.

Fundraising

In addition to her work with RCWG, Charlene is hosting a fundraising event in Toronto Canada, where a community of artists are donating their work for sale. All proceeds from the sales will go toward supporting the FAIR program, helping more girls embark on this life-changing journey of self-expression and healing.

It’s a chance to invest in the futures of girls who will grow into powerful young women through the power of art. We invite everyone to join us in this cause, contribute, and be part of a movement that transforms lives.

No amount is too small.

Every donation will be appreciated.
